Patio Furniture

August 19th, 2008

It’s summer time again and you want to change up your backyard? Well there are a few things you should consider before going out and buying patio furniture, for instants the cost and type of patio furniture.

First you should think about the cost. There are so many prices from cheap to expensive. It is up to you and how expensive you want to go. But remember it is a good idea to buy in bulk that is if you have a big patio. For one thing you’ll have many seats to accommodate if you’re ever entertaining so you wouldn’t have to take out the mismatched chairs. Going expensive or not is all up to you and what rang you can afford. You should decide that first before going to the store, so if you want help from the salesperson they can assist you much better.

The second would be to determine the size of your patio. You have to decide if you’re just looking for a small patio set or do you want to furnish both decks and pool area if you have one. Ordering on bulk can be quite handy if you entertain a lot and you would like to have coordinated and matching patio sets. But if that doesn’t sound like you, there’s no need to go all out. You can get a small and simple collection of the patio furniture.

Last but not least think about you’re location. Some furniture can hold up better in the summer and some are more resilient to winter. For example, resin patio furniture is better suited for sunny and windy conditions. And melamine furniture can withstand the colder climates. You can always ask the sales person which kind of furniture your looking for and if it’s right for your climate.

So whatever your need, there are patio furniture waiting for you. All you have to do is decide which are right for you.

Furniture Trends

August 5th, 2008

Furniture trends don’t really have a drastic change overnight. Mostly the trends are small changes nothing quite big. But they are subtle changes that might surprise you. The latest trends are all about accessorizing.

Furniture trends and designs today a more conservative, the colors are basically the same and so are the styles, which mean that the furniture pretty much stayed the same without many new arrivals or new styles. But there are new accessories that have come out with bold colours and patterns.

The statement in furniture trends today is global, with influences from all around the world. Furniture today is simple and has an international language, from Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa, and America.

The international trends express sophistication to tropical luxury. Animal prints have come back into style as well, with leopard to cheetah, skin looks may be used with antique and contemporary furniture, and it can go with anything.

Leather has been around for years and is still popular. Today you can have a collaboration of leather and fabric. Leather has also been as an accent on wooden and fabric pieces. So if you love leather you can still have it with a little more style.

To keep it simple furniture trends today have a mix of everything. Wood is mixed with fabric, or metal, or even glass. There are many new and exotic material such as coconut shells, stone, crushed bamboo, and even fossil stones. Could you have even imagined using those materials on furniture, I wouldn’t.

So there are many choices for those new shoppers, go out and explore the new and exotic looks that can be found! I predict it would be hard to choose from the new unique styles that are out there. Just have a style in mind and go from there.

New Furniture Can Be Comfy Too

August 4th, 2008

You’ve just moved into a new house and suddenly the comfy old furniture you’ve cherished for years—okay, decades – just doesn’t seem to work any more. Do you give up the comfy old stuff for new furniture? The truth is that you don’t have to choose. You can buy new furniture that is comfortable if you know how to shop.

Start with the living room. If you’ve had your couch, loveseat, or sectional for more than 10 years, chances are you need to rethink your furniture needs. Do you have a small child now who has trouble getting on or off of a couch that didn’t seem too wide when you bought it? Is your sofa apartment-sized to fit into your first place, but it seems out of proportion now in your new home? Take size and width of seating into consideration when buying. And the only way to know if it’s comfortable is to sit on it. If you plan to nap on your couch, lay on it right in the furniture showroom. Don’t be afraid to test the level of comfort.

Looking for a chair or recliner? Take your shoes off and sit in it like you would at home. If you usually tuck your feet under you, that’s how you should sit when you try out the furniture. See just how far back that recliner will lean back or just how hard the rocker can rock. While you’re trying out the potential new furniture, note whether it’s comfortable or not. If it’s not, don’t buy it. Move on. Furniture is not like shoes or jeans. You shouldn’t buy them with the hope of breaking them in for comfort over a period of time. The new furniture should be comfortable as well as functional upon purchase.

Moving to the dining area you’ll need to take into consideration your table and seating needs. A family of five probably won’t be comfortable squeezing around a breakfast style bar built for two. Likewise, a couple who seldom entertains and is years away from planning a family might not want to take up space with a table that accommodates eight. Know your needs. Know your likes as far as colors and styles. Then, have a seat. Again, it’s the only way to know if your new furniture is going to be comfortable.

No one really likes to lie on a bed in a furniture showroom, but if you are going to buy one it’s a must. Do you usually sleep on your belly? Crawl up on the bed and lie as you would if you were asleep. Roll around. How does it feel? Don’t buy the first one just because it felt okay. The next one might feel better and still the third might feel great!

If you are furnishing a home office, the same tips apply. Sit in the chair. Pull up under the desk. Pull out all the drawers and compartments you can find. Will the printer be within comfortable reach?

Keeping your house comfortable furnished doesn’t mean giving up style. And giving in to style, doesn’t mean that you can’t have comfortable new furniture!

About Furniture Rental

August 1st, 2008

There are many businesses out there which rent furniture by the month. You need a couch? Rent one for only $40 per month. Need a lamp? You can get one for $12 a month. Now, let’s see, in one year you would have paid $480 to use the couch and you wouldn’t own it. The lamp would have cost you $144 and it’s the same situation ~ at the end of your lease, you still own nothing.

Most of us would think it foolish to rent furniture. But, that isn’t always the case. There are situations where renting may be the best option. Consider these scenarios:

• Your company transfers you to a new location but the rest of your family is staying in your present home until the school year ends and that’s 4 months away. You buy a house and live in it until your family arrives. Do you go out and buy new furniture or do you rent a few necessities in the meantime?

• Right after you get married, you move into a new home. You and your spouse haven’t decided how you want to decorate your home. Do you rush your decisions or do you rent furniture until you find the style that will please you both?

• You graduate from college and accept a position in an unfamiliar city. You find an apartment that has everything you want, except furniture. You can’t afford to go out and purchase the items you’ll need right away. What do you do?

If you find yourself in any of these situations, renting all or part of your furniture may be a viable option. The thing you have to keep in mind is that it’s never a long-term solution. From the figures in the first paragraph, you can see how expensive renting is over the long haul.

However, when you find yourself without furniture, short term rental may be your best option. If you don’t have the cash or credit to purchase what you need, or if you only plan to be without furniture for a little while, short-term rental may be the best solution.

Most furniture rental companies offer several options from which to choose. Most of them also offer packages in different price ranges, depending on the style and quality of the furniture you require.

• The bedroom package usually includes a double or queen-size bed, night stand and lamp, and 1 chest.

• A living room package provides a couch, end table and lamp, cocktail table, and a chair.

• A dining room package includes a table and 4 chairs.

• A complete home package includes all of the above.

• You can also rent any accessories you may need, including cookware and china, rugs, additional lamps, TV’s, stereos, etc.

As long as you rent only what you need and do so for as short a time as possible, furniture rental may be the solution you need. But, don’t forget to calculate the cost of your rent or mortgage along with the cost of your furniture rental before you decide which package to choose.

If money is an issue, one question you need to ask yourself is this: do you really need the most expensive package or can you get by with the more generic and economical choice for 2 or 3 or 4 months? Unless you plan to do a lot of business entertaining, the answer is obvious.

In short, furniture rental can be an economically sound solution to your problem, if you use your common sense and don’t get in over your head. It beats sleeping on the floor any day!

Furniture Down The Ages

July 30th, 2008

All the movable household articles of equipment fall under the category of furniture. Furniture can be made out of metal, plastic, wood, glass, or marble. Whether it is an ordinary pine chest, country chair, or an elaborate ornamental cabinet, all are included in the wide range of furniture. Furniture is a decorative item that serves a purpose. Therefore it can be treated both as an item of necessity and luxury. Moreover, furniture is not restricted to the common stuffs like bed, chair and table only. In fact, other home furnishing materials like rugs, lamps, and mirrors etc are also counted as furniture.

The style of furniture has been changing as civilization has progressed. Various techniques of inlaying, woodcarving, painting, veneering, gilding and marquetry have been used to decorate furniture and make it look attractive. Furniture in the western culture is embellished in the styles followed by the Egyptians, Chinese, Gothic and Greeks.

It is logical to assume that the idea of making furniture must have originated from the human needs. Perhaps, the chest was the first piece of furniture designed by man because of his need to hide his belongings. Followed by the bed, stool and chair etc.

The old oriental furniture carried designs engraved in ebony and teak. The ancient Egyptian style of furniture exhibited the classiest form of woodwork, body and the decoration. It was distinct because of the carvings of animals that had gold and ivory inserted in them. The Greek style of furniture was distinct because of low couches and tripods. In the imperial period furniture was ornately decorated.

The contemporary style of furniture focuses on its multipurpose utility. This gives it a different appearance and is not so costly. For example, the most popular office-cum-bed set can be used for various purposes. It appears to be a bed with bookshelves and a shelf at the bottom, all built in one. But it can be easily converted into the office furniture having a desk, suitable for laptop, side tables and more shelves along with a chair. You have to see it to be able to understand the whole arrangement.

Such beds are already very popular in Europe. Apart from beds there are other pieces of furniture that appear to be something like a sofa but can be converted into many pieces of furniture as required.

Good furniture should be functional and beautiful. It should fit into the environment aesthetically. Furniture must be environment friendly. If it can adapt itself to different uses it will be very affordable, too.

What Exactly Is Teak Furniture

July 25th, 2008

Teak furniture is basically furniture made from a yellowish-brown type of wood taken from Teak trees. Teak is well-known as a durable and extremely strong type of material to use for furniture mainly because of the fact that teak is resistant to insects and warping. Teak is so durable and strong that it is also commonly used in the shipbuilding industry. Some believe (with strong evidence to back up their beliefs) that furniture made of teak material can last more than 1,000 years! So, if you’re looking for high quality furniture, investing in teak furniture is a guarantee that your teak furniture will last you for some time – even generations.

As the world populations continue to recognize the many benefits of owning furniture made from teak wood, there’s a rapid boost in demands. Hence, teak furniture manufacturers have resorted to using artificially grown teak wood to fulfill the demands of consumers.

Teak wood can be found in the humid, hot and wet tropical forests in many different Asian and South East Asian forests. Countries exporting teak wood are Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, Indo-China and more. Teak wood can be found in abundance in these countries; however, even with the richness in supply, the number of wild teak trees is slowly diminishing from these tropical forests. Teak trees grown slowly and naturally in the wild are considered stronger and more durable, therefore furniture made from wild teak generally fetches a higher price than furniture made from artificially grown teak wood.

Teak wood is used in the furniture industry because of its durable nature. Outdoor furniture needs to withstand weather changes and if your outdoor furniture is made from teak, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Teak furniture can take quite a beating from nature without deteriorating in quality. Outdoor furniture like park benches, loungers, poolside chairs, and outdoor tables are usually made from teak wood.

Not only is teak a sturdy type of wood, but they are also easy to manipulate and design on. Delicately designed carvings and etchings can be easily made onto teak wood to enhance the appearance of teak furniture. Teak has natural oils that make it easy to work with and teak may not even need to be treated with oil or varnish.

However, to safeguard against possible oxidation, proper cleaning and maintenance should be done on teak furniture regularly. Applying a water-based acrylic teak protection as opposed to applying a solvent-based oil product on teak furniture can help protect the teak furniture from degradation and extend the life of the teak furniture. Water-based acrylic teak protection can last up to 12 months and are easy to apply, easy to rinse, easy to recoat and most importantly, is environmentally safe.

You Can Have Your Cats And Your Furniture Too

July 19th, 2008

No one wants to invest hundreds or even thousands of dollars in furnishings only to see them ripped to shreds by an overzealous pet, however beloved. To many people the obvious answer is to have their cats declawed, but it this really a reasonable alternative?

Its proponents depict it as a simple and painless operation, but it is neither simple or painless. Most people aren’t aware that it’s not just the claws that are removed. Declawing involves the amputation of the first joint of each toe, and as any amputee can tell you, the pain persists for months if not years. The only difference is your cat can’t tell you it still hurts.

This doesn’t mean you have to put up with shredded furniture and drapes, or snagged carpets. I have four cats of my own, none of then declawed, and my upholstery and curtains are intact and my rugs unsnagged. There are a number of steps you can take to minimize or eliminate the damage.

1. Give them what they want.

Scratching is not just a means of sharpening claws, it’s a vital form of exercise that tones and strengthens the muscles. Even declawed cats go through the motions. It’s instinctive. Birds gotta swim, fish gotta fly, cats gotta scratch. Whatever. So give them something suitable to scratch on, preferably not one of those pint-sized carpet-covered pet department abominations. That only confuses them.

If that’s what you already have, at least pull off the carpeting and wrap it with good quality jute or sisal rope, half-inch in diameter, wound tightly and secured with glue. If you sew, you might try making a slip cover you can easily remove and replace as necessary. Burlap is good for this, but almost any fabric with a heavy weave or a textured surface will work. My own cats are partial to upholstery velvet and corduroy. Ideally the post should be at least two inches higher than the cat can reach.

Many cats prefer a horizontal surface to scratch on, and take well to a commercial scratching pad made from corrugated cardboard.

Whatever you decide to use, spray it lightly with catnip extract (not synthetic - they WILL know the difference) and place it near your cat’s favorite scratching spot. Once he or she becomes accustomed to the new surface, gradually move it to a more convenient location. These materials tend to be messy, so choose a spot where you can easily sweep or vacuum around it.

2. Use your good judgement when choosing fabrics and rugs.

Pass up all those lovely but delicate satin and damask weaves or the aforementioned textured surfaces. These are cat magnets. Knits and other stretchy fabrics are an open invitation to snags. Leather and faux leathers are also major no-no’s. Sheer panels at the windows? Forget it!

Look for strong fabrics with a tight weave such as sailcloth or canvas. Most denims hold up well, also. For curtains, go with something like percale or chintz. Most of the curtains at my house are made from bedsheets, and are not only attractive but virtually indestructible. For carpeting, a medium or low plush is preferable to a berber or a sculptured pile. Remember, minimum texture is the key.

As long as we’re on the subject, think brown. That way when your cat upchucks on it, and it will, it won’t be such a disaster. If your cat is still drawn to the furniture, a number of companies sell clear plastic corner protectors that self-adhere to most fabrics.

3. Trim the claws.

It’s not as difficult as it might seem, especially if you start them as kittens. Use a specifically designed animal nail trimmer and start out slow. Begin by just handling the paws, and practice extending the claws without trying to trim. The cat will become accustomed to being handled and will be less likely to react violently to the actual trimming. After a few days of this, try trimming, just one or two nails at a time, and only take off the very tips. If you still find it troublesome, most professional groomers will do it for a minimal fee.

4. Claw caps.

These are soft plastic covers that are glued onto the claws and last for up to 4-6 weeks. I’ve never tried them myself, but many people report good results.

Cats and people have shared living quarters for thousand of years, and with a little forethought and cooperation we should be able to maintain a harmonious relationship between ourselves, our pets, and our furniture.

Receiver Bike Racks - The Bike Rack For Your SUV

July 2nd, 2008

If you’ve got a pickup truck or an SUV, you may think that you don’t need to make an investment in a bike rack of any kind, because there’s plenty of room in the back of the truck or your sports utility vehicle for a bike or two. Right?

However, after you’ve driven around with your bike rattling around in the back of your SUV or truck, you may change your mind.

It’s not only the noise that may get on your nerves. Grease and dirt can quite easily transfer from your bike to the upholstery of the SUV, and of course you’ll have to flip those seats up and down to ensure you have enough room.

Even if you don’t care about the state of your truck bed, it’s easy to scratch your bike as well and you don’t want that. Scratches turn into rust. And if you’re carrying more than one bike, the chances of scratches or staining is multiplied.

What can you do about it? You can’t get a roof rack for your truck, obviously, and the roof of your SUV will be too high to comfortably lift a bike up to the roof.

No problem - if you’ve got a trailer hitch on the back of your truck or SUV, then all you need to do is get a receiver bike rack, more commonly known as a hitch bike rack. (The receiver is the name of the ball on which a trailer hitch is placed.)

Everybody Wins with a Receiver Hitch Bike Rack

Lots of companies offer hitch racks, from Advantage to Saris to Yakima.

There’s a couple of things you need to bear in mind when buying a hitch or receiver rack - what’s the diameter of the ball on which the hitch has to fit? Once you know that dimension, you also have to decide how many bikes you’re going to carry. You can buy a hitch rack that will carry up to five bikes at a time.

If you’re nervous about having your bicycles secured on the back of you vehicle, you can also explore the option of a bed mount.

This is a device that runs horizontally from one side of your truck bed to the other. You then put your bikes onto this rack and secure them down so that they stand up securely and don’t rattle around. You can also buy a similar device for your SUV, although you still have the hassle of moving around the seats - depending on the size of your vehicle.

If you’ve got a pickup or an SUV, then you’ve invested a lot in your vehicle. You’ve probably also invested a lot in your bike as well. So why not invest a little bit more in a receiver bike rack to keep everything safe, clean, and neat.

Rustic Teak Furniture-Fabulous Teak Furniture For A Rustic Look For Your Home

July 2nd, 2008

Rustic teak furniture that is designed specifically for the outdoors looks great and it is also exceedingly purposeful. The rustic touch definitely adds to the whole look of your teak outdoor furniture, thus helping you feeling closer to the nature and enjoying all the comforts of your home outdoors.

Rustic teak furniture is the newest trend in the world of home decoration and in all probability, this rustic fashion is here to stay for years to come. Outdoor patio furniture is most commonly produced with teak wood, however, other types of wood such as pine and cedar might also be used.

One major cause of concern while buying outdoor teak furniture is its ability to withstand adverse climatic conditions. The effects of these climatic conditions can be easily seen on the wood, coating, as well as on other parts of the furniture. Now a days, most outdoor furniture companies offer items that are waterproof and that age gracefully under the sun‘s rays.

One fine technique for giving a face-lift to your home is to bring some texture into it. Decorating with a rustic style involves making use of the natural color and texture of construction materials like wood and metal. The rich texture that comes with rustic furniture adds more style, drama, and movement to your house. Wood rustic furniture also comes with charm. Since it is made of natural material, it easily blends and harmonizes with any room, style or setting.

Teak furniture brings relaxation and serenity, making the house more warm and natural-looking. In today’s marketplace, the term rustic furniture could mean a handcrafted piece or an imitation rustic piece. Usually these imitations are made up of particle wood products or strong plastic.

If you wish to preserve the natural color of the wood, you may finish the furniture with waterproof finish. Many manufacturers also offer a variety of outdoor paint colors as well. Rustic wood furniture blends perfectly with your teak outdoor furniture adding a tinge of design and color to the environment. It seems so much more relaxing than patio furniture made from plastic, composite or other materials.

Rustic teak furniture brings back the nostalgic memory of countryside living into your urban apartment or home. This will keep your home environment more in balance. It never goes out of style and easily harmonizes with any style as long as they are used in limited numbers.

Elegant and comfortable furniture like Adirondack style chair, rocker chairs, benches and tables made out of rustic teak can provide artistic and lavish outlook to your backyard. So bring out your hidden creative ideas and put them into work. Make your house standout today!
